May 12: On a perfect evening, Carol led this year's garden walk on a perfect evening through an area in Near Northeast from 5th to 9th Streets between H Street and Stanton Park.

Thank You for Bulb Giveaway

Each year the club donates thousands of crocus and daffodil bulbs to the public for planting in pubic spaces throughout Capitol Hill. This year, Linda and Henry sent a thank you along with these photos of giveaway bulbs that they planted near 10th and Massachusetts Avenue NE:

Hill Rag Features President's Project

Tree Doctor Discusses Patients

April 14: Dr. Jay Stipes, retired professor of tree pathology at Virginia Tech, enthralled members with a seminar on trees, their diseases and some cures. His work included refining the injection of fungicides to combat Dutch elm disease. His "patients" include elms on the National Mall and historic trees at Mount Vernon, Monticello, and Montpellier, as well as on the Capitol grounds.

Dr. Stipes shared some pages from his notebooks where he has saved leaves, as well as notes, on historic trees from historic places.

Homestead Garden Show

Davidsonville, MD, March 22, 2009: The New York Times recently reported the cancellation of several annual garden shows. They thought this mostly a result of the current economy but failed to notice the rise of the destination garden centers, which have become year-round garden shows. Indeed, Homestead Gardens has its own spring garden show.
